Graduation
PROJECT GRADUATION is a tradition that
began in the mid-1980s as our community's response to the many hazardous and harmful activities often associated with high school graduation
celebrations. It is a chaperoned all night drug, alcohol and
smoke-free celebration for graduating seniors, promoting
the message that celebrating without alcohol, cigarettes and drugs is the right
choice. The location,
entertainment, food and transportation are provided! Many volunteers and
sponsors work together to make graduation night safe and memorable for all the right reasons…and we always
receive an enthusiastic response from the graduates in attendance.
PROJECT GRADUATION is NOT a
school sponsored event. Although West Orange High School endorses this
activity, after commencement exercises the students are alumni of WOHS. The Project
Graduation celebration is organized, funded and hosted by the West Orange High
School PTA and community volunteers, with the support, cooperation and
assistance of the West Orange Board of Education and the West Orange High
School Administration.
PROJECT GRADUATION will again be held
at Sports ‘n Games FUNPLEX in East
Hanover. It has been reserved for the evening of graduation. The participating graduates are bused there
from the high school starting at about 10pm.
Throughout the evening there will be food, entertainment, free games and
a wide variety of athletic activities and use of facilities, including an
outdoor pool, basketball courts and go-carts.
At dawn, breakfast is served then buses transport the kids back to the
high school starting at about 5:00am.
Adult chaperones are stationed in pairs throughout the facility for the
duration of the event and no one is allowed to enter or leave from the time the
last bus arrives at night until the first bus leaves in the morning. Security
is provided by Funplex.
PROJECT GRADUATION costs approximately
$90.00 per student, or over $35,000.
Typically, about 85% of the graduating class participates, and class
size is growing. Each student attending
will contribute $20.00 for the evening.
The remainder of the funds comes from the various fundraisers run by the
WOHS PTA and donations from local businesses, service clubs, civic
organizations, community members and parents of all schools. Please support our fundraisers.
